Train-When-You-Don’t-Feel-Like-It-Team-Rhino-Gracie-Jiu-JitsuIt happens to all of us. No matter how excited you are about your Jiu-Jitsu journey, there will be days you don’t feel like training. You’ll wake up early only to turn off the alarm. Or plan on a lunchtime or evening class and end up skipping it.

So, what can you do when your motivation disappears? Deal with it and train anyway? Honestly, sometimes that’s the best course of action. But here are a few more tips for how to train even when you don’t feel like it:

1. Remember your why.

When you really don’t feel like going to a Jiu-Jitsu class, take a quick moment to think about the why or the purpose behind consistently making it to the mat. Why have you made all the other classes and training sessions a priority in your day and life? Sometimes just remembering the purpose or importance of sticking to your training routine is enough to snap you back into training mode.

2. Establish consistency.

Establishing a consistent training routine is another way to help you maintain discipline when you don’t feel like training. Your training routine becomes a habit over time. So when you start asking yourself if you really want to go or not, the habit will override your question. And because you’ve been training on the same days at the same times for the past several weeks, you’ll show up.

3. Listen to your excuses.

When you don’t feel like training, listen to the excuses bouncing around in your head. Why don’t you feel like it today? Did you get less than two hours of sleep the night before? Or does the couch and Netflix just sound way more appealing? If there isn’t much behind your reason to skip a class, take a deep breath and steer your car toward your Jiu-Jitsu school. By the time you’re halfway through the warm-up, you’ll be glad that you did!
