Set-Effective-Martial-Arts-Goals-Team-Rhino-Gracie-Jiu-JitsuGoals are an essential part of becoming successful not only in life but also in martial arts. The martial arts belt tracking system is excellent for providing a source of progression and accomplishment. However, the next belt in your martial arts journey is not the only goal worth working toward.

To keep improving and stay motivated on your martial arts journey, it can be helpful to set goals unrelated to the belt tracking system. Having these additional goals can add some accountability to your martial arts training and keep you moving forward.

For example, here are some common goals that martial arts students set for themselves:

  • To lose weight or get healthier
  • To earn a black belt
  • To compete

These are each great goals; however, some minor tweaks can make each goal more effective in setting a martial arts student up for success. Here are a few tips on how to set effective martial arts goals:

Be specific.

Instead of “lose weight,” you could make this goal more specific by changing it to “I will lose 10 pounds by May of this year.”

Make a plan.

Once you have a specific goal in mind, think about all the small steps you will need to take to reach your bigger goal. These mini-goals act as checkpoints along the way to keep you motivated and accountable.

Be flexible.

As you begin working toward a goal, you may discover that your initial objective was a little out of reach. Rather than abandoning your goal altogether, make adjustments as necessary. Remember, these are your goals to achieve. No one knows you better than you know yourself.

Plan for setbacks.

No pursuit of a goal is without obstacles. If you find yourself off-track, know that setbacks happen to everyone. You get into a good routine, but then you get sick. Or your car has to go into the shop. Or you need to fly out of town for business unexpectedly. Once things calm down, get right back on track and moving forward.
