If you’re new to Jiu-Jitsu, the etiquette or code of conduct that students follow can seem like a mystery. So, where did your fellow students learn these unwritten rules? And how do you discover them for yourself?
When it comes to how you conduct yourself in Jiu-Jitsu, you’ll find that a lot is rooted in tradition, as well as common courtesy. To help you get a sense of some of the more common dos and don’ts, here are a few general guidelines to follow:
1. Be respectful.
Most of the guidelines and expectations you’ll find in martial arts come back to one thing – respect. Most of the other dos and don’ts that follow can be summed up simply by saying, “be respectful.” So when you show up to train, treat everyone (including yourself and the facility) with respect.
2. Listen while instructors are explaining a technique.
Whether you’ve been training Jiu-Jitsu for a week or several years, always listen. No matter how many times you might’ve heard the same instructions, listen. You never know when something might click in a new way that leads to improvement and progress.
3. Show up on time.
Always make the extra effort or do what you need to do to show up to class on time. Better yet, to show up a few minutes early. Having the time to prepare for class without feeling rushed or a step behind will allow you to get more out of your training that day. And your instructor and fellow students will appreciate your punctuality, as well!
4. Take care of yourself and your equipment.
When you train Jiu-Jitsu, you are in very close contact with others. This means that you need to take the necessary steps to keep yourself and your training partners safe. Be courteous on the mats. Show up showered and with a clean uniform. Never come to class when you’re feeling under the weather. And know your limits.
By following these and other expectations on the mats, you and your training partners will get more from and enjoy the experience.
